This one-day land navigation course is the foundation for all others. In it, students will learn how to read map features, use a compass for movement, plot courses with both map and compass, measure distance, determine location with UTM/MGRS protractors, and much more. Starting at 0900 and running until 1600, this course is jam packed with information and students just need to show up with appropriate clothing and lunch/snacks. All materials are provided. If students wish to bring their own equipment, they are encouraged to but it is not necessary.

Kevin Estela has been teaching land navigation since 2007 and provides instruction from multiple perspectives to suit multiple students' needs. This course is a modern navigation/map and compass course but some emergency navigation skills will be taught explained if time allows. The course starts indoors with basic orientation of equipment before moving outdoors to establish pace count and work with compasses on distance and direction courses. Depending on the skill of the students, culminating activities may include creating a distance and direction course, route cards with detailed information, or "hide and go seek" on the map with coordinates and resection.

This course is taught in an air-conditioned facility with a full kitchen, bathrooms, and tables with bench seats. Feel free to bring your favorite chair for even more comfort. It is appropriate for all levels and ages 13 on up. Minors are welcome accompanied by a parent.

Cost: $200

Due to the high demand for this course, all course registrations are final and no refunds are allowed.
